Jop Klaver , PhD
Dr. Jop Klaver is co-director of MaP – Microstructure and Pores GmbH, a spin-off from the RWTH Aachen University, Germany. After completing a joint MSc degree in geology at the VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Bergen University in Norway, he obtained a PhD at the RWTH Aachen University on the pore space characterization of organic-rich shales using Broad Ion Beam milling and Scanning Electron Microscopy (BIB-SEM). In the frame of his PhD project, he developed an integrated multiscale imaging workflow by using BIB-SEM mapping and quantitative analyses resulting in highly cited papers related to the pore space morphology and microstructure of Posidonia, Haynesville and Bossier shales. He subsequently developed the liquid metal injection method for assessing the 3D pore connectivity via 2D BIB-SEM mapping of metal injected rocks as an alternative to 3D methods. His main research interests are quantitative imaging of tight rocks and pushing the application of alternative alloys for liquid metal injection for the evaluation of porosity and permeability data in porous media as an alternative for mercury intrusion porosimetry. This technology enables investigation of the connected porosity in representative area at the nanometer scale.
